I have viewed about 30 videos on serpentine belt tensioners. All of them are very good and all of them show how to relive the tension on the tensioner. On my Cadillac it says to insert a 1/2 inch drive extension into the drive belt tensioner and push down. The only place that I can find to insert the 1/2 inch drive is on the front edge of the tensioner. All the other tensioners I have seen show the whole for the drive on the side of the tensioner. Or they show a bolt on the tensioner that you can put a socket on and use it to rotate the tensioner to relive the tension on the belt. My 1/2 inch drive does not fit into the hole so that I can turn it clockwise which would be the direction of rotation on the tensioner to relive the tension on the belt. Is there a 1/2 inch drive extension that is L shaped. I cannot find one anywhere. If I were able to find one,it seems it would be impossible to push it down to turn the tensioner in the clockwise direction because there is no space to do it. Does anyone have an answer for this problem.

Thanks for your quick response College man. In one of your links it shows the 1/2 inch drive extension that I described as an L shaped extension. Do you know where I can get this tool?
You may want to try the shortest 1/2 extension you have and put that into the hole and then use the tip of a prybar to push the extension downward……
If that doesn’t work, get some Serpentine belt tools…. The bar on the right should solve your problem…

Thanks ToyotaKarl for your quick response. I have those tools and I cannot get the one you suggested to work. If the slot was on the side of the tensioner, it seems it would work but not in the location on the end of the tensioner like mine is. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.
Karl I don’t know how to embed a picture in this reply. But if you would go to these to web locations you will find the pictures of my tensioner and the location of the 1/2 inch slot. Let me know if you have difficulty viewing these. Thanks Don13

OK, here are the relevant pics I believe…
What I believe is that you may not be able to see the 1/2 slot due to all the other equipment in the way… Perhaps get a light and mirror down in there. It should be at a 90 degree angle from the tensioner pulley roller on the side, facing toward the front of the vehicle….
Since the 1/2 opening looks like it is square with the tool being parallel to pulley roller and arm, you may be able to work it/slide it down there in that parallel configuration and get the plug into the hole….
P.S. A quick way to embed a photo is copy the image location to your clipboard (put your cursor on the image you want to copy and then right click, then select ‘copy image location’) then when you want to insert it in your comments, look at the little icons just below the ‘Subject” line and look for the little icon with a picture and little chain link in it (above the smiles near the grinning devil) then click that icon, then move the mouse up and paste what you copied in the URL box…. then click ‘Insert’…
Karl, I found the 1/2 inch slot just as you said. Previously, I looked at that location , it seems, a thousand times and did not see it there. I want to thank you for your patience with me. Also, thanks for your directions about embedding a picture in a reply, that will be very useful. Is there anyway to put that information on the ETCG web page?
I have learned that being a mechanic is a lot like playing golf. When I first started to play golf sand traps, rough and water holes use to psych me out. Then, I learned how to get out of these trouble spots and my game improved greatly. I am still learning how to work around trouble spots when working on a car. I try not to go to far with a repair without having a recovery plan. So I try to investigate all the possibilities before I start into a complex repair. Thanks again and stay near because I will be back for help.

Glad to help… I know what you mean about the psych part… My neighbor is repairing his car and it needs a new heater core… Winter is coming here in Ohio, and life without a heater core is not fun…. The core is around $120 and will require around 6 hours to do…. (It is a Volvo, and they start the engineering of European cars with the Heater core and design the car around it! 😆 )…. I have said I would help him through the process, but going in and removing half the dash is a bit daunting for him, he is trying to do anything to not have to do it…….. Slow and easy, take your time, use baggies and record everything… Can’t go too wrong with that….

Glad you were able to get this sorted. Here is the information on how to post a picture.
Anytime you are looking for information like that, just type in a couple of words into the search function like ‘posting a picture’ and stuff like this will come up.
