I happen to drive an Mercedes Sprinter 216 from time to time with “license plate bulbs” installed as the side running lights or whatever they are correctly referred to as. Downside is that from time to time it burns out 1-2 bulbs when then has to be replaced at some level of cursing and annoyance. I follow ChrisFix on youtube and saw that he had replaced his number plate bulbs with LEDs instead and noticed that said LED’s are more or less a direct fit for said side running lights.

My suspicions are that the side running lights gets blown out due to excessive moisture or some other form since the fitting they are installed into doesn’t seem all that water tight. But is there some way to improve the seal and keep moisture out, while still enabling me the option to change the bulbs without having to break out a box cutter and cut through a silicone seal etc?

The license plate bulbs of today suck. They do make long lasting ones that are a little
better lasting. I have change my license plate lights to led and love it. What you will need
to find out is are you getting moisture in the lenses? Are the bulbs from the trunk side or
        outside in bumper?

First off are you touching the light bulb themselves cause the oils from your hands can cause the bulbs to fail prematurely. Second if that isnt the case Id stick o-ring to take the gap in the housing and the bulb. You might also wanna check to see if there is a gasket around the light housing itself and might be worn out.
