My 03 Dodge Dakota 4.7L started making a scraping noise today when turning left and the only thing I could see that was possibly the problem was the passenger side lower ball joint. I had the upper and lower ball joints on both sides replaced at my local independent shop about 2 months ago and this one seems to be oozing some kind of grease. pic attached.Could this be whats creating the noise or is it something more sinister?

ozzing is normal if you just greased the joint, check to see if there is any major tears or rips in the boot it’s self. As for the scraping, make sure your backing plate isnt bent.

I came across this Eric the car guy video I think will help you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=scFbb43fwqk In the video it said that the struts are full of oil, my guessit maybe leak on to the ball joints or somewhere down the line.It also explains different places to check & how to.Hope this help. My car has a problem w/ upper & lower ball joints, also.

I had the mechanic check it out while I was at work. He said it was a combination of bad shocks, bad control arm bushings, and a bad steering shaft. yay…

However I do appreciate all the suggestions. Thanks

Be careful though. A friend of mine also had a scraping/grinding noise when make left turns and he was told that his cv joint was going…. I checked it out, turned the wheel and saw that a piece of the splash guard came loose and was hitting the tire. Take a look for yourself by doing the same thing and push the car down a few times to see if it makes a noise and get a friend to do the same while you go underneath to check it out. That ball joint looks like it is ripped right in the middle there.

When I was doing the front bounce test I found it very strange that the passenger side bounces quite easily and the drivers side is very difficult to bounce. I’m not sure what to make of this. If anyone wants pictures of anything specific let me know.

Did it keep bouncing more than 2 times after you pushed it? Have you noticed any oil around the shock?

No, it only bounced about 2-3 times so I think that side is actually working better than the suspension on the other side. I really cant get the driver side to bounce at all even putting my full weight on it. I didn’t notice any leaking oil.

struts the same on both sides and springs? is a strut stuck?

Or do you mean you can push the car down and it comes up and stops and you cant get it to bounce? but the other side bounces?

                      Someone hit a curb recent?

Is it a hollow scraping like a thick tin can or a scraping like 2 large pieces of metal grating against eachother?

I dont think the joint is causing the noise.
