I watch his videos from time to time but I wonder if he’s really doing them because he likes making videos or because he’s taking money to sell a product?
He likes to do a lot of local news stuff and he seems to have mostly one sentence fix-its for any kind of question.

All Scotty Kilmer does is band aid things. Sometimes those band aids also make it worse. He is an idiot if you ask me and should be sued for defamation of character against our field. He also should be sued for giving piss poor advice over an extended period of time. Though this one would be hard to prove and also would make it harder for people to give advice without the possibility of lawsuit.
He is part of the reason us mechanics and technicians get a bad name. People out there like this, show a 15 to 20 min fix where the actual fix takes hours. Then the average everyday person with no clue flips out when they get charged for hours. Also because he band aids things they constantly break as the band aids fall off. That makes us look incompetent and thus we are all perceived as stupid. Lastly but, not least for providing advice on something when he obviously does not know how it works. This creates problems for other people and people who know what they are talking about think once again that we are stupid.
On top of that he bans people that make him look stupid and explain how things truly work. He also removes their comments.
February 14, 2015 at 2:09 am #655292I’ve always felt that Scotty Kilmer is a mechanic. He does know his stuff however in the way he presents it on YouTube is more for a quick content then an actual how to video. He loves to bash on the European makes a lot which I personally think is unfair. I dont like recommends that everyone change there oil every 3k miles when science has proven its wasteful and still argues with people about it. Now when he started yes it was a good idea to do it but with modern oils and lubricants and detergents in the oil is downright bad for the environment and wasteful. Your car’s manual is a way good starting point for its change interval.
Personally I still watch his content as he at least entertaining to watch even if i disagree with him sometimes. I’d much rather watch Chris Fix or Eric for better how to content
February 15, 2015 at 4:38 am #655373I have no problem at all in saying that if Kilmer was employed by an independent shop or a car dealership he would be unemployed within a few weeks due to comebacks.

April 30, 2015 at 7:12 am #662547Ok, it has to be said, Chrisfix seems to be the best now. But to me, all of them are enjoyable. (except briansmoble1 and fixbook, those 2 get on my nerves).
April 30, 2015 at 2:59 pm #662572I’ve actually never watched a Chrisfix video yet even though I’ve been seeing them come up for a long time. I suppose I should check it out.
One of the guys who I have a lot of fun watching is Jafromobile. He’s mostly doing performance work on his own personal projects, but just about anyone could learn some things about engine work from him, as he is very educated and meticulous. He demonstrates technique very well and thoughtfully considers things that many overlook. He specializes in old DSM/Mitsubishi/Hyundai performance. I’ve been making videos lately myself as a kind of a thing for fun (to make work more fun). It’s a mix of demonstrating unique repairs and just plain hilariously broken cars coming in our shop.
I’ve posted on this forum before about my feeling that Scotty grossly oversimplifies things in a way that can make the layman almost maliciously ignorant, if they take his advice literally. I’ve watched purely for entertainment for years, but the shoddy repairs he sometimes does are disgusting. I have to disagree, Bluesnut, about him failing to work as a professional. There are plenty of shops that would ship him in no time, but there’s at least that many that wouldn’t. The bar is shamefully low, in my opinion. Most of Scotty’s terrible work I’ve seen is still not the kind of things that will come back quick enough to be a firing situation. I wish you were right, but there are a lot of people professionally fixing cars who shouldn’t be.
May 1, 2015 at 3:16 am #662639Even the mechanics who put out videos of them working on their own cars are pretty good and informative. To me the best thing about Eric is that he puts out a lot of videos and they come out on schedule, ALMOST ALWAYS, ON SCHEDULE. Also Eric goes into depth on them, and doesn’t gloss over anything. Having said that (oops, that’s Eric’s favorite phrase), I enjoy Scotty Kilmer’s videos just as much as Eric’s. And Chrisfix is the best of all. Chris fix subs btw, look to me to be growing faster than any I’ve ever seen.
May 1, 2015 at 3:24 am #662641Chrisfix is quite good actually, I think his stuff is quality anyways.
May 2, 2015 at 12:37 pm #662814I do not feel right saying Eric and Kilmers name in the same sentence! I only watched a couple of Kilmers videos and immediately dismissed him as a crazy hick not worth my time and that squeaky voice, huhh no thanks, not for me. Eric is in a different league completely, professional v hick!
May 2, 2015 at 9:52 pm #662850I like chris fix but, his knowledge level to me is of that of an entry level tech. He is much better then Scotty Kilmer. I have been watching a lot of sixtyfiveford videos as of late some of his fixes are band aids but, some of the others are just borderline genius.

I can’t say I’ve seen videos by sixtyfiveford to make any sort of judgement.
May 3, 2015 at 6:44 pm #662934Well ya see, Scotty Kilmer does common sense repairs. Since common sense is so uncommon these days, many people don’t understand what’s going on. For instance, why spend a thousand dollars to fix a car that only has say 2 years left anyway? Scotty may have a 10 dollar fix that can last 2 years, maybe more. Plus Scotty can do the big dollar repair if thats what the customer wants. He can work on anything, not just Hondas.
Also if ya want to be critical, you could call the so called body work that Eric did on the Acura a hack job. I think Eric fixed the leak in his trunk, (no pun intended), good enough for his purposes. That’s what the customer wants, they want repairs that are good enough for their purposes. Anything more is overkill, or up selling.
Calling Chris fix entry level has got to be pure envy. That guy will go far, he’s just starting out and already has about 200,000 subscribers. I can’t see any repair that could stump him. I don’t resort to name calling for any of these hard working video repair techs. If you want to call Kilmer a hick, then i guess excellent repairmen are hicks.May 3, 2015 at 7:09 pm #662938Here is how I rate them:
Scotty: Good for entertainment, not for serious repair and details. As I’ve mentioned previously, his attitude towards quite a few things is childish.
Chrisfix: Very professional and great content for basic auto repair as well as being very detailed. I also like his product test videos. He will go far.
Eric: For the professional as well as the advanced DIY, although Eric has just about something for everyone. Very very detailed videos. Eric can do way more than just Hondas, he just specializes in them. Saying Eric can’t work on anything but Hondas is like saying that I can’t work on anything other than General Motors. I specialize in GM, I prefer to work on GM. Everyone has their preference.
May 3, 2015 at 7:24 pm #662941I agree.
