How much do you want to spend? Professional mechanic or DIY ?
I’m a driveway mechanic for 39 years and I have the Snap On MT2500 updated thru 2001 my newest vehicle is 1996
May 4, 2012 at 11:00 am #453739you could look at actron or auto xray look for something with live data and freeze frame data. for the fluke
mod#179 C8-) also found this auto enginuityMay 4, 2012 at 11:00 am #453740AnonymousI use the following and they work great. But then, I’m more of an auto restoration guy, not a mechanic:
1. Sun/Snap-on LS2000 automotive 2-channel lab scope (they’re about $300 on Ebay). Oldies but goodies.
2. Innova 3110 (for a quick code read/reset). You can get a much better graphing scan tool for less money now, but when I got it, it was state of the art. I like that you can update the firmware on the Innova scanners.
3. OBD Link Multiprotocol OBDII / CAN Bus USB scanner with OBD Wiz Pro and Scan Pro software. Powerful tools and not too $$$.
4. Power Probe IIIThen, of course, you have multimeters, ammeter, fuel pressure testers, vacuum gauge, compression testers, spark testers, noid lights, etc. etc. The fun never ends.
If I were you, I’d start with a nice OBDII scan tool like an Innova Eqqus 31603 and go from there.
May 4, 2012 at 11:00 am #453738obd 2 scanner Diy and Professional. I don’t want to spend alot am just starting out.
May 10, 2012 at 11:00 am #453741Get a midline Craftsman multi meter and look at the C Launch and the Autel Maxi Das scanners. They do a lot more than the Snap On and are a lot cheaper as well. They don’t have the scope which is nice but you can pick up a used Genesis with a scope on ebay for less than $500. The scanner won’t be up to date but the scope will be just fine. As you are just getting a decent meter you are a long ways off from needing a scope anyways and would truthfully be better off just buying an obd II code reader right now.
January 30, 2013 at 10:54 pm #495859Hey people. I need some advice about scanners. I saw Eric’s video about the use of a scanner and he used an Actron device. I would like to buy a scanner that can be use for American cars and also Asian cars like Toyota, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Hyunday, Honda etc. Both old and new models. It would be my first scanner and I don’t know what to buy. What do you reconmend? Actrons? What specific model? Thank you

January 31, 2013 at 3:37 am #496026I don’t know what the difference is. I just need a divice that can tell me why the engine light in on and what is causing it. I think a scanner does that but can you explain me what the difference is? thank you
