Hey all! I was driving along and got a CEL. Of course it concerns me because from experience when a CEL comes on all I see is hundreds of dollars being vacuumed from my bank account. 🙁 I took it to Autozone and they plugged in their engine diagnostic tool and pulled two codes. P0171 and P0130. The first one is for a lean condition (bank 1) and the second one is for something like a malfunctioning O2 sensor circuit? The car runs fine, no issues with it so it, and it’s not that old. It’s a 2002 Subaru Legacy with 97,000 miles.

As a DIY’er, I want to avoid the shop as much as I can, so what can I do to diagnose this myself? The guys at Autozone and my Dad (mechanic 31 years) said it could be a lot of different things from a bad fuel injector, bad fuel pump, bad o2 sensor, vacuum leak, etc, so I don’t know where to start?

If you could offer me some guidance that would be great!

      -Nick

These are both for lean codes. Change the fuel filter if
it has one. Search for vacuum leaks.clean the mass air flow
sensor. With the car running, pull the vacuum line on the fuel
pressure regulator to see if fuel leaks out.If so replace the fpr.

Great videos (I’ve seen them before).

The air and fuel filter are both less than 12,000 miles old (the car had a 60k service at 71k miles back in October 2010). I will check the FPR and I’ll look for vacuum leaks as well. I did some more looking and am starting to think it might be the front o2 sensor going bad. A P0130 is usually related to that. I’m not experiencing any performance issues per se as it runs great. The fuel mileage isn’t the greatest and the transmission is tired, but that’s all I can think of. Any other suggestions would be awesome!
