I have a 98 saturn Sl2 drove it to part store today about 1.5 miles did a compression test I got 175 195 190 198 tested th first one 3times wet test was 200 210 210 210 then started it burned all the oil out about 4mins then tested again 3 times and got 203 202 200 201 waited 20 mins did it again 3 times and. Got the same numbers. After the wet test I made sure after I ran it to check and make sure the cylinders were dry . Cars runs good. Used oil but I wanted to just check the engines health it has 195,000 miles. Any idea what would cause the inconsistent numbers? Thanks for the help. Greatly appreciated

Well to reassure myself I redid the test this time making. Sure there was no fuel . I also did it with engine cold that way I would get the lowest numbers possible. All across the board was 198 203 203 204 so pretty darn happy about that.

Those are good compression numbers for sure. I’m still not convinced that you don’t have a problem. A quart of oil every 600 miles is alot, and valve seals shouldn’t cause that much oil to be burned unless they are really bad. But if you are content to add the oil, then keep on drivin’ the hoss. Good luck bro. If all your questions were answered, please turn the traffic light to green, so others can find your post by searching the database.

Does your air duct/air filter have oil in it?
You might want to make sure the PCV system is working right.
Take the PCV valve out and shake it, If you hear a ball rattling then it’s probably ok.

I wouldn’t worry about those readings, pretty impressed considering the mileage on it.

Saturns are notorious for bad oil control rings. Maybe thats the only problem? The pcv is a fixed orfice type. Helps with consumption.

You can have good compression and still have stuck oil control rings. Also you can have bad valve seals cause oil consumption issues which will not show up on a compression test. If it were me I might try replacing the valve seals in the car as that is the easiest thing to do and then monitor for the symptom, if it goes away you win, if not then you know you have to break open the bottom end OR replace it with a used or rebuilt engine. Here is a video my friend Duane did on replacing valve seals without removing the cylinder head.
