safety glasses

In the past I’ve been able to get by with the cheapie safety glasses. Now with my age “advancing”, I can’t get away with then anymore since the distortion makes working on small things a bit difficult.

Do any of you have a recommendation for the most important tool in the box?

I wear prescription safety glasses but at work a lot of people like the Smith & Wesson Elite safety glasses.

Ill second the Smith and Wesson glasses! We have no choice on my job, safety glasses or go find another job. I find the S&W don’t distort and pretty good coverage too. I do find because they sit close to the face that they fog up like a bastard if its cold or wet out. Completely un-related to cars I took the small end of a tree branch to the face last week. If I hadn’t had glasses on I would have lost the eye, ended up with just a very minor scratch on the cornia instead. If I can find a pair of the S&W glasses with a yellow tint Ill be set for rainy season!

JS i know this sounds stupid but, put rainx anti fog on them. From what I have heard it works well though when u clean it often it doesn’t last long. The best part about this is a bottle meant to do a car is going to last a while for just doing a pair of glasses.

noob working advise …

I wear prescription glasses and over them I used those safety laboratory like safety glass, they are pretty good and clear for small jobs, for grinding I got a cheapo face shield and … well I like it !

My problem now is when you try to add a dust filter mask to this , my prescription glasses got fog all the time because of hot air escaping toward them, valve masks are bit better … I will have to buy a real cartridge mask to try if it is better…

I would suggest approaching buying safety glasses the same way someone who needs prescription glasses would, I assume, go in somewhere and put them on. Move around, bend over etc. I’m getting into the same boat you are, I worked one place that went and got us the cheapest safety glasses possible. That night I went and bought a “premium” pair.

i do not recommend the safety goggles that go over the prescription glasses. i used those for a year. and went through 3 pairs of glasses because of them. every time i would get hit in the safety glasses, it would scratch my prescription glasses.

….so, i just got a pair of prescription safety glasses for $150.

Just wanted to come back and say thanks for the S&W elite recommendation. I got a pair from Amazon (under $10) and I’m really happy with them. They are not everyday use (since I;m a dIYer), but for the jobs I’ve used them for they were light, no distortion (and actually maybe a bit of magnification) and it was like I had no glasses on at all.
