Recently after doing some service on my vehicle I notice some areas were showing signs of rust.
Nothing extreme or structural but enough to have me a little concerned.
So I decided after 16+ years maybe it was time to address this.
Looking around YouTube I found several home brewed solutions.
Some better than others.
After looking at the different home made recipes and their short and long term effects I decided on this.
2 wax toilet seals
1 Quart paint thinner
6 oz of chain bar oil.Melt the wax rings in a metal coffee can.
Once melted, add the chain bar oil and paint thinner and stir well.
When it cools to room temperature, transfer the mixture to a container that can be sealed ( 2 L soda bottle worked well )What I had come to find with many of these home brews is the following.
Straight chain bar oil:
A bit to thick to use in a paint sprayer and requires thinning.
Will wash away and requires repeated applications.Melted wax seal and Boiled Linseed oil:
Again, too thick to flow through a paint sprayer.
Requires more thinning or heating the mixture to allow it to flow properly. When you use the wax, oil and paint thinner combination.
This allows the mixture to flow easily through the paint sprayer with out clogging and with in 24 – 48 hours the paint thinner evaporates from the mixture leaving a thicker coating build up on all sprayed surfaces. One suggestion to make applying this easier would be to use a modified gravity feed paint sprayer.
I purchased a cheap one from Harbor Freight ($13.00 ).Unscrewed the paint container fron the top of the gun and fitted a 6 foot latex hose to connect the two.
This allows you to hang the container pretty much any where out of your way and reduces the size of the spray gun for better maneuvering in tight areas.Hope this helps.
