I bought Eric’s video on how to do a timing belt on a 1997 Honda Accord LX. I stuck rubber hose down the spark plug well as he did in the video, but when I was using my screw driver to get it in there, I ripped the hose and now have a piece about 8 inches long stuck in there. I have no idea how to get it out. Please help me. I don’t know what to do next.

I think you may have to remove the head. I would not drive it until this is fixed.

Any ideas? This rubber hose is about 9 inches long and is inside the cylinder. I can’t reach it with any tools, hell I can’t even see it.

I can’t think of anyway to dissolve it, and cutting it up isn’t possible since I can’t even see it.

              I can’t believe this has happened…

Actually, I take it back, I CAN see it, but I think I’m seeing the middle of it…

Use one of those reach tools that flex and the three prongs come on when you push the button. Sorry I dont know what it is called but I use it to get fasteners when they drop in bad spots.

There is a new Harbor Feight in Sterling VA. They have that and also has some extended needle nose pliers and surgical pliers.

One of these ‘parts grabbers’, as pictured here would work possibly.

Maybe a wire coat hanger straightened out with a small hook bent in the end? Maybe with some double sided tape wrapped around it?

They also make some surgical forceps that would work great, but would probably be hard to find and expensive.

I’ve been trying with the grabbers, no luck so far… I can grab the hose but just not the end of it…

                        Forceps might be great!

I’m not sure exactly how far you are in the job, but could you rotate the engine to get the piston a bit further down in the cylinder, maybe it would give you a better shot at grabbing the end of the hose?

The hose is about 9″ long. I can make the cylinder go up and down all day, but I can no longer see it. I don’t see any other options than taking everything apart.

New question. If I strip it down to the head, I may as well replace the head gasket, but would I need to have the head machined? It not like the head gasket actually went bad, so I would think it should be find to just replace the head-gasket and go, right?

There is no spark plug just a piece of rubber hose?

before taking the head off you might consider purchasing a boroscope from harbor freight. this will allow you to see into the cylinder via the spark plug hole allowing you to see the location of the piece of rubber hose , you then may be able to get ahold of it. the end of the this boroscope is a little to big to fit through the hole but held tight to the hole will still work. if you are carefull with it you may be able to return it after using it for a refund. if you pull the head you will need a new headf gasket and would recommend doing the intake and exhaust gaskets , valve cover gaskets , spark plug tube oil seals.

619DioFan: I looked at a boroscope, but I think you’re right, they’re too big to fit in the sparkplug hole. This would mean I would have to essentially take apart the engine. I really don’t WANT to, but I may have to. It was leaking oil in one of the sparkplugs, so I was going to take off the “cam cage assembly” off, as Eric does in this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYU8qtPzQOY.

Hopefully, with a little more wiggle room, I may be able to reach it better, and get it out. Especially since I have to go that far anyway.

I’ve been toying with whether or not I want to replace any gaskets on it, since none of them have gone bad, I would think they would still be okay, and better than any Fel Pro replacement ones I can get from Advance Auto.

                                  College Man:
Yes, the rubber hose went into the engine THROUGH the sparkplug hole.

Tomorrow will likely tell me everything about how bad my week may get…

So what do you guys think? Replace the gaskets, or keep them as is? Since they were fine all along(except for the valve cover gaskets).

straighten out a coat hanger and solder a small fishing hook to the end, a bit fiddly but should do it with some patience. you may have to tease the hook end out a little further to enable a good grab.
