1999 ford taurus SE wagon dohc.

RPM needle kind of does what it wants. Sometimes itll rest on 0 RPM, sometimes it seems to be right (most of the time it seems to work) othertimes the car seems to not have as much power and the RPM is about 1000 low on the gauge (500 instead of 1500 which would be more normtal)

Videos are below, some are stop go stop some are as I was driving. On startup it does make a groaning/whine sometimes which is followed by the RPM needle dropping to 0 or going really low and then popping back up. So whatever that is, I am pretty sure IS changing the RPM. But during normal driving I dont hear or feel that groan/whine happening. It goes away after driving a bit. (I think its my tensioner pulley bearings but not sure how that would affect RPM if its even that)

      Thanks all for the input!
First video shows start to stop and the jumping inbetween.

This is from one stoplight to another, shows the needle resting on 0 alot.

I just recorded this because the needle was being weird again.

It doesnt always happen. When it doesn sometimes its just once, other times its an entire trip. Car seems fine when gauge reads 0 RPM once past startup, no shakes trembles or noises.

According to this wiring info the tach signal comes from the ignition coil behind
the air intake manifold. inspect the wiring. If you have a scanner read live data
for the rpm signal. If you can read the signal then its the tach gauge or connection
at the tach. If the rpm can’t be read then its the wiring or coil/connection having the issue.
This wiring is for a sable but is the same as taurus.

Used a scantool, PCM is sending correct RPM the gauge just isnt always listening. Something loose in the cluster.

          Thanks!
