I’m not saying this is your problem but I often see that when an igniter goes bad. Do you have an aftermarket distributor installed by chance?

I have a 1988 Lebaron that the analog tach went bad on. Took apart the instrument cluster and re soldered all the connections on the PC board and it fixed the tach problem. It may or may not fix yours though. Just a possibility if all else fails.

A+ on Erics post. also check the wires going to the distributor and igniter for loose or broken wires.C8-)

Did the vehicles engine speed also increase? If so, check your accelerator cable for any type of binding or kinks.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. The problem was solved by adjusting the throttle cable. The vehicle had been in the same spot for about a year and the cable need to be loosened up. Thanks again to everyone.

the cable must have been super tight. The idle would be high all the time. thanks for the fix and the updateC8-)

Interesting, that’s a first for me but if it’s fixed all is good. Thanks for posting the fix it will go on to help others that use the site and the forum.
