I have a 1992 ford ranger XLT extended cab with the 3.0L V6 engine. The engine has been running rough for some time, and I’ve been chasing my tail with it. I started simple with new spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, verified ignition timing with a timing light. That didn’t help. I tried looking for a vacuum leak by spraying carb cleaner on the hoses and where the upper manifold meets the lower manifold, but couldn’t seem to find one. Then I tried a new fuel filter since it’s as old as the truck. Still nothing. I decided to plug in a vacuum gauge to see how the engine was operating. From what I saw, it would start at 18 inches of mercury which seems a little low to me, then bounce down to no lower than 15 inches then try to climb back up to 18 inches. It doesn’t look like the needle is as steady as it should be. I tried doing a compression test of the cylinders, but none of my adapters work. I have the right thread size, but it doesn’t reach the threads in the head. What else can I check?
