Hey guys, I’ve been having a problem with my ’03 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7. This problem actually started about mid to early June. At highway speeds (At Or Above 80 KPH – 50 MPH), my truck’s RPMS rev/surge. So let’s say I’m cruising around 1500 RPMS, when I hit a bump/dip in the road the RPMS shoot up 300 to 400 then go right back down. You can clearly see it on the tach and hear it though my exhaust, (Dual Exhaust). And it’ll do it whether it’s in overdrive or not. At first, the problem wasn’t that bad. But now that the cooler whether has come upon us, the problem seems to have gotten worse. My truck now revs/surges on almost every crack, bump, or dip in the road. It seems to even do it if you ever so slightly lay off the throttle, and i do mean slightly. In all honesty, it’s driving me nuts. And it’s also worrying me as I’m afraid it’ll damage something else if i don’t figure out what’s causing it.

With that said, I’ve been reading up online trying to find the solution to this. Everything I’ve read thus far points to a faulty TPS. Others suggest it could also be any of the following: Dirty Throttle Body, Bad Spark Plugs, MAF Sensor, IAC Sensor, O2 Sensor/Sensors, Crankshaft Positioning Sensor, ECM/PCM, etc. And honestly, i don’t know what is causing it or how to fix it. All i know is that i need to fix it. And this is where i hope someone on the forum can lead me in the right direction.

Note: My truck does not throw a CEL. And it also drives and shifts through each gear without a problem.

      – The only other issue i have is that it’ll stall out of the blue once in a blue moon, (Usually Going Very Slow). Like when your crawling forward or backwards using slight throttle.

      – Beyond that, it’ll idle rough at least once a day when i get to a stop sign. After that it idles and runs smoothly the rest of the day. Plus it also has plenty of low end power. But I have been finding it’s a little sluggish when you need a little more power or speed cruising the highway. It’s almost like I need to mash the accelerator for it to move at highway speeds. Kind of dangerous during the winter months.

Anyways, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

our dodge ram 2500 was doing the surging thing then it became a dead pedal we replaced the APPS (Accelerator Pedal Positioning Sensor) for manuals or the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) for automatics. I don’t know if i would rule out the APPS or TPS yet because it never ran rough at a stop but this was also a diesel.

@Nathanielearl777, thanks for the reply and suggestion. I’m honestly hoping it’s just a TPS sensor or something. So I’m trying not to think of the worst, (Trans Problem). Anyway, I have my appointment tomorrow at the garage (Not The Dodge Dealership), so I’ll see what they say. I’ll keep everyone updated.

Well, I went to the garage today, (Not The Dodge Dealership). And of course my revving barely happened for him. Guess I should of went on the other highway which was bumpier. Anyhow, it did happen but only a few times. But he couldn’t seem to figure out what was causing it, Surprise..!! Anyhow, I’ll take his suggestion though and give my engine a good tune up. Gonna get my plugs replaced, throttle body cleaned, and probably replace the IAC and TPS sensor. He doesn’t think it’s the TPS but I’m gonna change it anyway seeing its a relatively inexpensive part. Going to start with that and see if that cures it. Will keep everyone updated.

Update: I got a tune up done on my Ram in late October. Had the throttle body cleaned, IAC Valve cleaned, New TPS Sensor installed, And all new plugs put in. The sad part about the plugs were that they were the originals. Obviously the previous owner/owners didn’t care much for general maintenance. 6 of the 8 coil packs were stuck and took some finessing to get out. One was so bad that half of it snapped off. It took the mechanic around an hour to get the other half out of the cylinder. He had to drill it out to remove it. As for the plugs, they came out without any issue which was a bonus. But as I stated earlier they were the originals and were so finished it wasn’t even funny. The gaps were double of what they should of been. They were suppose to be .40, all of them were anywhere from .70 to .80 over. Anyway, it’s done and my truck runs like a dream now, no Revving whatsoever. 194,350 kilometers later. All I can say is I’m glad that I didn’t tackle that after the hellacious time it gave the mechanic.
