I finally have gotten to the point where I’m gonna stop putting off rewiring the reverse lights. By rewiring I mean REWIRING. Orignally when this truck rolled off the assembly line in ’73, it came with an automatic TH400 according to the original build sheet. As some of you now know, it has a a SM465 manual that was put in probably before I was even born. My Uncle is a master electrician and gave me a good length of wire today which was nice of him. Tomorrow is when I’m going to begin this project.
Here is my gameplan:
1. Verify how much of the trucks original wiring is left for the taillights(I already have a good idea of this).
2. Find out if the original TH400 column shift electrical range box is still able to be used as a catalyst for the circuit through ohms test.
3. If I can use it, due to it’s great location I will jump the terminals so that “reverse is always on” to maintain some originality and run the wire through it(this way I won’t have to re-fuse anything through the fusebox.
4. Mount a manual switch to the dash and wire that into the circuit so I can flip the reverse lights at will.
5. Crimp in a length of wire to complete the connection from the cab to the taillights
6. If necessary create a new dedicated ground.Hopefully all goes according to plan and I won’t have to splice into existing wire. I am counting on the TH400 range box still being operational after all these years. I will make it work regardless as I learned electricity from the best(my Uncle) as a kid! Was top of my class in electrical and most of the guys come to me for electrical advice. This is cake compared to what I’m used to dealing with 🙂
