i have an 01 olds intrigue 3.5l v6 auto trans one great car i think but my problem is when i go into revers it works fine when it is cold but once warm its like a manual with a burnt clutch or slipping clutch. sometimes it doesn’t even kick in or it takes forever to kick in but still slips.drive 3, 2, and 1 work fine its just revers. i might also add that i smell burning trans fluid wen in revers just a hint of the smell not strong. what could be my problem here?

p.s. trans fluid is at a normal level and nothing leaks

Im guessing were dealing with an automatic transmission here but you didn’t specify…
The first thing to check would be the Transmission fluid. Make sure you check it the right way the manufacturer specifies. It might be with the car running in park, or in neutral. Or it could be with the car off but warmed up. Be a little more specific on your problem if you have any more questions.

is the fluid discolored or smell burnt?
If it does then you have a trans problem.

I believe your looking at a transmission failure. 🙁

Take it easy on that reverse gear. Make sure the car is completely stopped before you shift into reverse. And stay in reverse for a few seconds to make sure it catches completely. Hopefully the rest of the trans. is OK and it will hold.

By your description I’d say you would need to replace the transmission. It sounds like you have some seal failures that are causing internal leaks which cause the slipping. I’d look for a quality reman and swap it out.
