Restore plastic “stained” by wax or polish

Hi all!

These days I’m polishing and waxing my dear BX, which is white and its colour was a little dirty, and also the paint seemed “rough” when passing the fingertips on it.

As usual, to avoid damage to the non-painted plastic parts I have masked these with masking tape, however the black plastic door handles just repelled any attempt to mask them.

Thus a little polish ended up on them, and of course they “absorbed”, so the black isn’t black anymore.
I tried to clean them with some plastic shiner/renewer (silicone based I think) but with little effect.
Then I tried some alcohol and that seems to have removed some of the polish, but it’s not perfect.

I wondered if some of you out there have a better solution to this problem.
Same thing can happen on plastic non-painted bumpers, in fact my old AX had suffered some stains too!

Clean the black with a mild detergent like greased lightning then use some mothers back to black on the handles. Follow the directions on the bottle, you’d be surprised how many people don’t do this. Good luck. (Detailer for 7 years)

I’ll try to find some alternatives to the products you suggested (they do not exist here in italy) , however by looking at their respective website I think I understand their basic composition and should be able to find something similar.

I’ll let you know of my results!

You can use 3M Wax & Trim Adhesive Remover..

If you’re wanting to do this on a budget, pencil eraser and some back-to-black.

Thank you for all of your suggestions!

For now I used alcohol and brake cleaner to remove the majority of stains; also, I used better quality masking tape that actually managed to stick to the handles :cheer: and made my life easier.

Thanks again, I’ll try your suggestions next time I polish the car! 🙂
