Hi cbschroeder33,
Check out EricTheCarGuy’s video for rear brakes on a ’02 PT Cruiser.

The special tool designed to help with removal of the spring from the pin is convenient, if you have it. If you don’t have the special tool, a pair of pliers works too. Hold the pin’s head on the back of the backing-plate with your finger (just push on it). Take the pliers, open them so that the pliers straddles the end of the pin, and push the hold down clip and spring inward towards the brake shoe. As the spring and hold down are depressed, twist the pliers to twist the hold down clip. Once the end of the pin and hold down clip are properly aligned, release the pressure on the pliers that is compressing the spring. The hold down and spring should freely separate from the pin. Good luck and keep us posted.

For the original poster, what vehicle are you working on?
October 2, 2011 at 11:00 am #453196I always buy the $3 dollar hardware kit and just use sidecuts on the back side of the backing plate to cut the pin head off.

October 3, 2011 at 11:00 am #453198The correct tools make all the difference but here is another video in addition to the one that was already posted.
October 9, 2011 at 11:00 am #453199I just use a flat head screw driver although I am probably going to buy that tool
