Just as I was under the car, I’d noticed that the oil pan to my 94 Honda Civic has severely decade from years of salt and corrosion. At present, the rust bubbles feel soft and I’m starting to see motor oil seeping ever so slightly. I dare not so much as take a wire brush to the oil pan.

My question to the forum is two fold. First, how hard is it really to replace an oil pan on a Honda Civic? The reason I ask, is that I’ve seen several examples on Youtube, whereas the procedure looks to be pretty straight forward. A better question might I be, what am I overlooking?

Secondly, within the past three weeks, I’d invested over $40.00 in Amsoil synthetic motor oil in my last oil change. The final question that I pose, is if I were to drain the oil into a clean bucket, could I reuse the oil without any issues, or would it be considered contaminated?

      Thank You.

As for the oil, theoretically yes. However, the undersides of cars are dirty and if I’m working under there dirt or whatever is always falling. That is why Eric recommends safety glasses. If you don’t wear them you will have stuff in your eyes. The same goes for the oil.

You could try spraying the pan really good with brake cleaner before draining the oil to help keep dirt from falling into it. When you go to put the oil back in, pour it through a coffee filter. May help to warm it up before pouring it to speed things up, but it will take a while.

The pan is simple. If it is leaking through the steel it needs to go now before your motor gets blown out. Slap a new one in and go.

I believe that the difficulty of changing an oil pan is if the front subframe is under the oil pan, which is the case for RWD cars. I’m not sure about FWD cars, but I can imagine that you would need to get an engine hoist to lift the engine up if the subframe is in the way, which gives you more work.

No, it apparently not going to be that hard, and thankfully.
