I just purchased an Alternator Belt to replace my old one and I can’t put the damn thing on. It’s really tight I tried everything. I even purchased the lever pulley, but no luck. I tried searching for YouTube videos, but no luck on how it’s done. They just talk on how it’s done, but don’t show anything.

Is it suppose to be that tight like it’s ridicules I can’t add the new belt on.

Is there some sort of trick.

      Thanks all for your help.

      Mike

Is this your set up? This guy is using one hoss of a wrench to take tension off the belt. Maybe a trip to a Harbor Freight is in order?

I believe you’ll have the best access by removing the front wheel and covering in front of the engine. I find it much better to replace belts from under the vehicle than above.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

You’re right, the info on the 2.0 online for this procedure is a bit scant. The alternator should have a “lock” adjuster bolt directly underneath the alternator. This bolt is oriented from left to right, the way the alternator itself is set in place. The nut for this bolt will be on the side. This bolt if fitted through a curved metal channel that enables you to lock the alternator in place when the proper tension is achieved on the belt. Directly in front of the alternator and underneath (towards the front of the car) is a long bolt that is used for adjusting the tension/ loosening the tension on the belt. So to loosen it, you first loosen the lock bolt nut (in the channel), then you are able to take tension off the belt by adjusting the long bolt on the front bottom side as described above. Loosen it by turning in the counter clockwise direction (I believe). If the alternator has been in place for a while, it may be stubborn about moving, so you might need to use a little gentle persuasion by hand, or gently prying it in the right direction…shouldn’t take much force at all. Eric’s advice is true, all this is easier to access with the tire and splash guard removed. With your flashlight and mirror, all this should become clear when you first look at it.
Well, I hope all this wasn’t wasted if the set up is different. Best of luck. Keep us posted.
