By welded, I mean the down pipe that connects to the cat. converter is welded. There’s no flange on the down pipe, or the cat.

Instead, it was simply welded on, by what looks like a novice welder. I can take pictures, if needed.

The problem I have is – I bought an exhaust system, and the down pipe that connects to the cat has a flange on it.

I was thinking maybe cutting the old down pipe right after where the weld meets, and clamping the downpipe & cat together.

What do you guys think? Good, or bad idea?

Here’s some images. You can obviously tell in the 2nd last picture where the flange was cut off on the cat. (Who does that?)

The last picture is where I’m planning to pipe cut it off, and then clamp it together.

There are exhaust flange repair kits that might do the trick for you.

Right now, you are my god.

I kept looking for “Exhaust adapters” because that’s what they were called way back then.

You saved me a whole lot of trouble. Thank you, sir.

Evil-i is on the right track. I hate to be that guy, but considering the exhaust has already been hacked at once. You might want to consider having a professional do the welding. Then just drive home with no exhaust :p . Welding exhaust isn’t always easy considering the angles you have to do it at sometimes, then if there’s any sort of rust it’s worse. Just a thought.

Or you could use a piece the same as the inside diameters inside and a couple of clamps, there are other options available than the plain u-bolt type. Then you’ll have some give as far as setting the length properly.
