Hello everybody!

I own a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic, 1.8 l gasoline engine, with the 6 gears automatic transmission GM 6T30 MH9, with 65000 miles.
This transmission has no dipstick.

I want to replace the automatic transmission fluid, and make at the end the right level of fluid.
From what I can find on the internet, it is a very difficult procedure. And I don’t know if the info i found is right or not.
For example someone said that the fluid must be at 185-203 degrees, but in normal driving, the temperature is around 140-150 degrees. I have a OBD reader for that.

I hope I can find here the information I need so I can replace the fluid. Maybe even a video by Eric, because this is an issue not covered in the existing ones.
If this is not possible, perhaps someone can post for me the info from the service manual for this car, concerning the automatic transmission fluid replace. I don’t think that there are more than 2-3 pages to scan.

Thank you.

The owner manual – I have it and read it: and I think I fit more to severe use. So, at 45000 miles I had to replace the fluid. But I din’t do it because of lack of information.

I know this video, but it doesn’t help at all. They don’t say anything of the fluid temperature, just to be with engine running and gear lever in P.

I think this is a very interesting subject for Eric, because the most of the new automatic transmissions are as this one – without dipstick. There are many people that own cars with this kind of transmissions, and they don’t know how to replace the fluid.

A video describing this operation will be appreciated, I am sure.

Yes there are many owners with these autos now. In my view you are best getting an auto transmission specialist (or a competent dealership) that is familiar with these transmissions to do the job. If you do not know what you are doing you can easily end up adding insufficient fluid when you go through the re-filling process. Since it is not an item that needs doing every 2 years or so for the average owner it is not worth the DIY trouble that might save you 150 bucks or so in labor charges.

Yes, if you have that kind of specialist in the area where you live.
I don’t.
Not even dealers.

L.E. I think I found something:

My guess is it is the same kind of transmission: 6T30-6T40.
But it still doesn’t tell me how to raise the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid from 60-65 degrees Celsius (as in normal operating conditions) to 85-95 degrees Celsius.

Any ideas?

L.E. 2 Is there a way to retrofit a dipstick to this transmission?
Maybe in the place of the transmission air vent?

I replaced the fluid:

I drained the transmission when hot – 60 degrees celsius.
I put all the fluid in a recipient, let it cool until the next day, and then mesure it: it was 4.7 liters.
I filled the transmission with that + 150 ml =>> 4.85 liters.
Now I remember that will be the amount I will fill the transmission with, each time I will replace the fluid.

I hope this amount will be ok. I will see next years if this will be ok or if I will have transmission problems for overfilling a bit the transmission.

I believe they’ve been using that transmission for years. You can check the level, but you need to have all 4 wheels off the ground and level as you would on a lift. Then you remove the inspection plug while the engine is running to check the level. I suppose they were looking to shut out the DIY on this one. That said, it sounds like you got it solved. In a very intelligent way I might add. Nicely done. The only other thing I’ll add is that it’s very important you used the correct fluid. If not, it can cause issues down the road.

Thanks for the updates and for using the ETCG forum.

I used GM Dexron 6, bought from the local Opel dealer.

You think is ok the amount of fluid I filled the transmission with, or I overfilled it a little?

It will be ok in time, to keep that amount of fluid each time I replace it?

We have a 2015 Sonic 1.8l automatic , so I will bet it is the same .

What I did was jack up the LF side & remove the wheel . Open the hood and lay a 3′ level on the top radiator support . Raise / lower the LF side until the level was level .

Remove the drain plug in the bottom of the transmission . After draining , replace the drain plug . Remove the upper inspection plug on the wheel side of the transmission . Fill until new Dexron 6 ATF drips out of the inspection hole . Start engine and with foot firmly on the brake , run the transmission through the gears several times .

With the emergency brake engaged , transmission in park , fill again until Dexron 6 again comes out of the inspection hole . Best I remember , some where around 5 quarts + – .

Put everything back together , drove it to bring ATF temp to normal . Jacked it up and checked it again .

Note , the ATF that came out is very dark , almost black .

Thinking about doing this procedure , spill & fill , again .

Wyr

God bless
