I have a 03 saturn vue with a 3.0 when we first got it use, a stripped the oil plug then they put in a over sized plug and you guessed it they stripped it to. I did a temp repair by replacement with a expandable rubber plug. Don’t like that repair so I hunted a use pan which is another story then found that there was no gasket. Told to use the black RTV I hunted high and low and did a lot of research what I found shocked me .I found that a oil pan gasket from a Saab 2000 3.0 is a perfit fit cost was on e bay 30.00 free shipment. I was told they never had regular gaskets on it.

        That is normal sometimes.

OEM on that pan is RTV, but some aftermarket companies design gaskets from the pan specs and provide them.

Like the rebuild I just did on a Mercury Villager (Nissan Quest) has no official gasket, Nissan used RTV on assembly, but I found that Felpro made a gasket for that pan if I wanted one to put in. I went with RTV as that is what the manufacturer used.

The other reason that you can find gaskets is because many techs don’t like or trust RTV. If used incorrectly it can cause more problems than good. The two big issues I see with RTV is people use too much and use the incorrect type.
