I know this one is outside the realm of auto repair but I thought I’d make the video anyway. Comments welcome.

Eric, great videos even when off topic.Just would like to add some helpful hints on the area of the laser disk read error.I completely understand that sometimes lasers can and will go bad if left dirty, causing the laser to work harder till it burns up.On the off side to using cleaner and a q-tip…which i have had luck with, there are laser disk cleaners that have little tiny brushes on a cd disk which can clean light dust on the lens. Also on the topic of disk read error there is a contact point on the laser that closes telling the xbox 360 that there is a disk in .Kinda like a order of operation that must take place,I know its hard to explain but this contact can get stuck with hair in the gear drive not allowing the contact to close. Also the plastic piece on the gear drive for the laser can become loose because of the spring on the underside coming loose. Many older game systems with cd drives face these problems and in this economy the throw it away and buy a new one era is sadly coming to an end.
When I got my xbox 360 from ebay it had every problem in the book, being it was the second generation 2006 model and only 25 bucks ,I repaired it and never had a problem to this day.Since im not out for a profit im happy to give any info to help others in need.

It’s always handy to get a how to video on taking these things apart, easy to break.

my only gripe with this video, is it’s more difficult than just straight swapping out the CD/DVD drive on these, if you chose to or need to go down this road.

The easiest way I can put it is like how many car manufacturers now code Radios to cars ECU’s. the Radio will just work with the car it’s meant to be in but requires a code to work in any other.

With the Xbox 360 is not always easy to get the CD/DVD drive coded to a new Xbox, you gotta have the right know how, and ether re flash the drive Firmware on the DVD drive with the DVD key the original drive for that xbox had( many drives require modification to remove the read write protection on the drive’s motherboard ), It’s even harder change the DVD key in the xbox is self with the one of the new drive.

If you don’t do this The xbox 360 will not load any games. It will see everything as a dvd video or CD!!

The other issue is that any time you flash the drive of the xbox, you are making modifications that may get your xbox banned from xbox live, if you use that. All the tools to do this publicly came about from people trying to play pirate copies of games hence why microsoft take a dim view of any unoffical modifications.
