I wanted to get your opinion on this master tech’s process to remove these plugs that have a nasty habit of snapping off during removal. I think several vendors even make a special tool to get the broken plug out after it’s snapped off – so that goes to show you that it’s a pretty frequent thing if they go through the trouble to make a tool just for that.

It’s the first I have ever heard of getting the engine hot before removing the plugs, and he uses an impact wrench to remove them.

I’ve never seen a tool to get the two piece spark plug out after it comes apart. what have seen is a tool that rethreads the spark plug hole
deeper in the head. Ford goofed on the head design and the two piece spark plug design C8-)

There was a really good video on the Lisle tool, I can’t find it right now. But here’s the NAPA tool:

I used to work at a Ford Shop and I’d heard horror stories about them, luckily I never experienced one. But that is something to keep in mind! Seems to work great

One of the guys i know who broke 5 of those plugs on a Triton. He used a the same setup as that Napa kit and it worked flawlessly for him.

I read elsewhere that this affected engines oven many production years. I wonder why Ford waited so long to fix the issue. Early on some owners were paying for new heads when plugs blew out on Ford engines, and on these 3v units heads would have to be removed to get the sparkplug out before the tool existed. Maybe making a design change quickly would be like admitting guilt and they would have a few million truck owners demanding a free fix? So they just deny there’s a problem and the owner has to pay the repair bill. I hate when car manufacturers pull stuff like that.
