2002 Ford Ranger XLT. The cruise control buttons located on either side of the airbag/horn have disintegrated. I have seen several You Tube videos on replacing the buttons and the method involves removing the airbag/horn assembly. Of course the battery terms are disconected, but the thought of messing with the airbag has me hessitant. Is the airbag inert with the power removed?

I know for other cars I’ve worked on, you have to disconnect the battery (as u already have) and let the system power down for a little bit. The SRS system has a backup power source that will keep the system hot after primary power loss. I’ll c if I can find a specific procedure for this.

As stated the SRS has backup power so watch out for that. To be honest unless there is a LOT of static electricity around I don’t think it will be a problem. The reason for the safety precaution is warranted however I’ve disconnected many an airbag without incident. You’re right to be cautious but I don’t think it will be a problem for you.

I think the rule of thumb is 30 minutes for the capacitors to drain off if the battery is disconnected. Other than that, I agree you’ll be fine.

Good luck sir. You’ll be fine. Just don’t put yer face in front of the airbag when you are removing it. 🙂
