Actually, it’s not for me, it’s for a friend. He’s basically a shadetree mechanic and only works on his own cars when it’s a job that he can handle. I own a Modis and he has borrowed it on occasion, but now he wants to buy his own (thankfully!) and he doesn’t want to spend big money.
So what’s a decent scan tool for a decent price that would be suitable for his needs?

Well if he is looking for bi-directional capabilities, he could shoot for a MT2500. Obviously there is no support for them after 2006 i believe.
If not, the Actron CP9180 (i think it is) shows PID data at least as well as having the ability to read domestic OBD 1 vehicles.
The newest Actron scan can do ABS codes too (on domestic only i think?).
Just tell him to buy a Snap On Verus 😀

Is there anything more low end that you can think of? His budget is $300 max and I believe he wants something current. I honestly haven’t kept up with scan tools very much, so I couldn’t really recommend anything to him. I’ve heard that Actron is really popular, but I don’t know much about them.
BTW, is there anything with bi-direction control that isn’t big money? Keep in mind I’m talking current scan tools, not older ones that have been replaced by newer models.
Also, does anyone here know anything about Toyota’s TIS Lite? I read on another forum that the software and cable can be purchased on ebay for around $50.00. Since my buddy has two Toyotas, it might be a good option for him. I’m not sure how capable TIS Lite is, but for that price, it’s still got to be a great deal. And if it has bi-directional controls, then it would be the best deal ever.

Then download the torque app from google play store.. i have the free version but the pay one has more options. works really good for me so far

MT2500 was supported until 2008 version 9.2 software I believe. Excellent Professional scanner for vehicles 2008 and older. Yes, It’s what I use and I’m not a professional.
