      First post here 🙂

So I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 and I’m rebuilding the top half of the motor. My question is when I get everything put back together should I turn the engine over with no spark or fuel to get the oil through the engine? What is the best thing to do when rebuilding the top half of the motor for the first crank? Thanks!

So I can just start it up? Its been drained of oil for at least two months. I changed the timing chain as well.

It will not hurt anything if you fire it right up, may hear a little ticking for a few seconds from the lifters until they get pumped up. But it definitely wouldn’t hurt to roll it over for 10-20 seconds before you fire it.

It certainly wouldnt hurt anything to keep the plugs/fuel out and crank it over. The last place that recieves oil in your engine is the heads.

Whenever I do heads at work I usually just dump oil all over the surface of the rockers, cams, etc just to get some lube there.

                Dry startups suck!

So I got every thing put back together and cranked it over for about 20 seconds with out fuel and spark. On the first start up it fired right up but the idle was about 2,000 rpm’s. I seen I had a some vacuum hoes mixed up so I got that sorted out and the rpm’s went down to 1,500 and then I got a error code P1391. From what I have read that is the camshaft sensor or the crankshaft sensor or something related to that. I’m going to disconnect the negative batter cable for about a hour and see if that fixes the code. Also I tried to test drive and it stalls pretty bad but the engine is running very smooth with no ticking or noise.

Do any of you guys have any thoughts on this error code P1391 or what is going on with my truck? Thanks!

EDIT: So I let the truck sit for 1 hour with the negative battery cable disconnected and its not giving me the code now and the truck has been idling for 20 min and the rpm’s started out around 1,200 rpm’s and now after 20 minutes its’s (1,500)and seems to be going up slightly. I’ve read that once you reset the values it needs to idle for a least 30 minutes.

Does anyone know if this is normal for the rpm’s to be a little high? Any thoughts on what is going on?

test drive, still drives like crap and stalling
                  new codes!!!
