I am in Toronto, Canada. Where do I go to buy starter and alternator rebuild kits. Please let me know. I don’t have the time to order off the internet and wait. What type of store should I look for ?

The Toronto area is big enough there should be somewhere that has a rebuild business for starters, alternators, etc. Check with some of the non dealership repair shops and see if they have a shop that they use to purchase rebuilt parts from that does the repair work in house. Contact them and see if they sell repair parts to the public. I live just across the boarder from Sarnia, Ontario and I’ve got a shop that does repair work like that and will sell parts to the public, also have a shop that rebuilds A/C compressors. Check on line with google or check the phone book(s) for the GTA you should find something.

To be honest I don’t recommend you rebuild alternators or starters. To do it properly often requires specialized equipment. In addition the stuff that’s available already rebuilt seems to work just fine and may be a less expensive option.

However if you’re intent on doing it then as suggested I would contact a shop that specializes in that work as they would know better than anyone where to find those materials which I suspect would be all over the map depending on what you’re working on.

For the alternator you may just need a new regulator. On some models the regulator is very easy and inexpensive to change. As for the starter, if it is turning but not turning the motor you may be able to just change the solenoid. From my experience changing the solenoid isn’t really worth it though. The solenoid usually costs almost as much as a whole new starter and in the end you have a new solenoid on an old tired starter. As far as rebuilding them, Eric is right, it normally takes specialized equipment to reassemble the brushes and other internal components.
