i drive an 1988 Chevy Silverado 2 wheel drive with a 350 in it. i changed the rear differential oil in it today and replaced the rear differential cover do to it being rusted and nasty looking. i unbolted the old cover drained the oil out witch was black and burned smelling i changed the covers out and filled it up with new rear differential oil. after words i drove it in town and every thing was ok to me. seemed to drive a little better to me but on the way home on the high way it just never really sounded like it ever kicked into overdrive would changing the rear differential oil make shifts sounds any different at all or im i just going crazy.

You might need the anti slip additive, which fluid did you use?? Shouldn’t have anything to do with overdrive though

Yea you need to find out if your diff is an LSD, if it is then you will need the additive or you will ruin the differential. Normally there is a tag on the outside or some indication but with a GM I would bet if you called the dealer with your VIN they would be able to tell you if yours came with LSD.

If you open the glove box and look for a sticker with a bunch of codes on it usually one of them will indicate what kind of differential it has. I’m not sure the specific code, I hear G80 or G81 is limited slip, but I’m not sure if its any different for an 88. Its not much help but its all I got.

If it has a 350, I would say it has the 10 bolt rear end W/ LSD, but I could be wrong.

I agree, look at your RPO codes especially all the codes starting with G. You probably have a limited slip. For example, my 1990 step side has G80 – positraction limited slip and GT4 – Axle ratio 3.73. If you do have a LSD, add the proper amount of additive or buy some gear oil with it already added.
