Hello everyone, I have a question. My rear brakes (which are drums) make a thumping noise when i brake. Here’s some things I’ve done

      _ Replaced drums, and shoes
_ I had a leaking wheel cylinder, replaced along with a new line, broke when trying to disconnect. I bled out that line only!

I have no pulsation or cant feel none when braking. I notice i only get this sound when braking from a fast start. Otherwise its not present. Any suggestions would.. Thanks a lot, bymechanic83

were they thumping before you installed the new drums and shoes?
if not, i would double check the work and make sure they are adjusted correctly.

side note… i wonder if its the new drums?
id be interested in hearing what the other folks say on this one. please keep us posted on your progress.

It only the one side, the one where i did the line. And to answer your question no it didn’t do it before. I m wondering if I got a bad drum. I noticed today as i got home that i smell a burning smell on that side, even though it was throughly cleaned .

sounds like the rear brake is not adjusted correctly.
if your smelling the brakes then the shoes are to close
to the drum. need to recheck your work heres a video

The smell may be the result of misadjusted brakes as suggested so it’s probably not a bad idea to check that. There have been quite a few posts lately that involve bad brake parts out of the box but I’ll also say that it’s recommended that you machine any NEW brake part before you install it on the vehicle to prevent this very thing from happening.

ok everybody here’s the update. The noise is gone, it happened to be the passenger side, not the side i had done the line and cylinder. I still get the smell, maybe from something on the drum idk. But anyway I was shown that the way to adjust the drums is the put the wheel back on and and adjust them until u get one wheel rotation. Is this the correct way or is that way to tight. Any suggestions for future refence would be much appreciated. Thanks to all who have helped

That’s too tight in my opinion, I like at least a turn and a half. This video shows my methods.

Hello everybody, well u were right, they were way too tight! Took the drum off after a lil drive and the brakes were smoking under the drum!, hahahaha. O well, i will get them re- machined as for now it ok but very very soon since its my only ride to work in the D 🙂
