Last night while I am changing the fuel filter on my 04 Mustang GT I noticed the axle leaking near the brake, thought at first it is the caliber but it turn out to be the axle oil not brake fluid. Took it to a mustang expert, he only works on Stangs. Told me to get a oil sealant and bearing. I did and he changed one side (the leaking side) and left the other side unchanged because it was OEM and the failed one was aftermarket.

Anyway my concern is him not changing the axle fluid. I was with him the whole time he is working, asked him to change the fluid, he told me no need to change and reused the fluid he drained from the axle.

My question is, did I need to change it? the manual says no need to change. But re-using after draining !! doesn’t sound safe to me.

It really depends on the mileage if there was any metal particles in it and if the fluid was drained into a clean container.
There is nothing wrong with re using clean un contaminated fluid.

Fwiw Toyota recommends re using transmission fluid and not to change it for the life of the transmission.
