I’ve got a buddy who has a 1990 4X4 Toyota R22 regular cab that’s an automatic. He’s replaced just about everything on the truck and the only thing it needs now is the computer or “brain” as some folks call it. He found one and ordered it and the dang thing turned out to be the computer for the manual R22 instead of the auto and another computer he found was for a 2WD. Anyway, he said that he can’t find the computer for an auto 4X4 R22 pickup anywhere and I was wondering if you guys could help him out. He doesn’t have a PC or the internet so I’ll be relaying all the info to him. Any help would really be appreciated folks. He’s looking to get the truck running for his son’s 16th birthday.

He could send the old computer away for repair. Any parts store that sells Standard Motor Products ( I believe that Carquest does) could send it away for you.

I’m sure that other places could do that for you also.

I didn’t think about sending it away for repairs. I’m guessing they would probably re-flash the computer as if it were a big flash/hard drive? Anyway, thanks for the tip. I’ll look into it.

BTW, I found one store online that claims to sell every computer for every make and model vehicle and even they didn’t have this one. Go figure.

The TCM is a separate computer located on front of the shifter. It piggybacks with the ECM an runs off of a handful of parameters like throttle position and engine temp. Yours being a 90 model it will have a cable speedo instead of electric.

What problems was he having before playing musical ECM? I may have one sitting on a shelf you are welcome to.

I’m not sure what kind of problems he was having before so I’ll just tell you what I know so far. He said that with the original computer the truck wouldn’t do a thing at all including turning over or starting. Then when he hooked up the 2WD computer the truck would start, but it wouldn’t shift into any gears. He told me that’s the reason he knows it’s the computer so take that for what it’s worth. Do you think the ECM that you have would do the trick? Another problem I’m having with finding one is that the serial number on his is completely worn off so now I can’t even search online by the SN.

The ignition cylinders go out quite often in these trucks.

There is no difference in a 2wd or 4×4 22re ECM.

The one on my shelf turned out to be an early model, sorry.

There is a easy way to turn the truck over, just above the starter, there is a black solenoid signal wire, bypass it and send 12v to the solenoid with the key on, if it turns over and cranks, follow procedure to trace what is not allowing the solenoid to see 12v. The only way I can see a not start because of trans is the neutral safety switch, the circuit does not go through the TCM.
