About 80% of my tools are from hf. I have some pretty good tools from them that have never let me down and I stand by them. Here is a list of some reliable tools from hf that has always worked out for me. There are more, but here is just a few:

1/2 drive and 3/8 drive breaker bars
      64 piece socket set with 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 drive ratchets
      Their go-through socket set
      1/2 drive torque wrench
Their short and deep black impact sockets
      Their impact extension set
Their hex and torx socket set
      Their swivel set
For light to medium duty use only, their 4 piece pry bar set is good
Their 20 oz. hammer is reliable
      3 ton floor jack
      3 ton jack stands
22 piece wrench set with metric and standard sizes
Their metal (not plastic) wrench holder
A/C manifold set and vacuum pump and more.

Now here is a list of things that I can remember off the top of my head that has failed on me and I would recommend not getting. The list is short:

      Tire plug kit
Cheap socket set that cost about $4
      Wobble extension set
Their rotary set that cost about $10-$15
      The small generator
Nut and bolt assortment set with washers
      Their 6 ton bottle jack

Most of these are real cheap quality. Everything here has broken on me except the rotary set which is just useless. If you have any questions for an item not listed here, let me know and I’ll see if I can answer your question.

Add to that as a junk item. Tap and die set.

Just went out to Harbor Freight this morning.. got the orange-handle plier/channel lock/side cutter/wire snip combo pack for like $9. I just tried to use the channel locks today in my auto transmission class… and the channel locks skipped out of the detentes on it’s very first use.

Last week, a student came in with a brand new harbor freight air ratchet. About 1/2 way through the class, i heard an explosion followed by the shop air hose flailing around. banana:

I have ton of snap on tools and in the last few months I have bought some Harbor Freight stuff and they seem to work well I don’t think they will take the beating that the snap ons do but since I am retired and don’t use them every day they are fine I think for some one starting out harbor freight will be fine .And if you still want to stay with it then replace a little at a time with snap on when you have the funds to spend
harbor freight stuff will not last as long as snap on Hell I have snap on tools that I bought back in 1965 that I have used hard and today still are in good shape So It really up to you how you are going to use your tools For a week end jobs Harbor freight will be just fine For every day abuse THEN its snap on all the way

Harbor freight is mcdonalds. It may technically be what it’s advertised to be, and some people like it quite alot, but when it comes to quality, only a few things they sell could be sold anywhere else.

I buy some stuff from HF and its cheap if you need an item for occasional use. I have a 1 inch drive socket set that I have used on an impact before, their sockets are tough if you buy the professional series, I can’t say anything about the cheaper ones as I have broke a lot of their stuff.

Most of the supplies like cable ties, cotter pins and the like are very poor quality and you might be better off paying a little more elsewhere.

I have a pancake compressor (black) and it works awesome, I also have a red one and it aint worth nothin. I had to mess with the air regulator to get it to pump over 100, I bought it mainly for the air tank and it leaks on the welds. Buyer Beware when it comes to a deal on a compressor (noisy and slow).

For the money I would consider Harbor Freight stuff but I prefer ToolTopia because there is free shipping after spending $99 and it is brand name stuff seen on the tool truck.
