**Edited 30.03.17, uploaded new video, better sound quality**

      Hi!
I was hoping someone could give me some advice on where to look/what to look for, regarding this annoying rattle/growling noise.
      I’ve uploaded a NEW video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZw_u8hNpUo

My car: Audi A6 (C5, 4B) 2003 model, sedan, with Automatic transmission (CVT, multitronic). Bought in Germany.
Engine: 1.9 TDi pumpedyse, 4cyl SOHC, 129 bhp. Engine ID: AVF.
No engine codes, no powerloss. The car runs smoothly.

The noise is present at idle & at rpm range 1400-1600 only. There is no difference between driving and standstill. The noise is present at the same rpm range regardless of gear (park/neutral, reverse, drive).

I’ve tried looking for loose components/screws/tubes, exhaustpipes etc. I’ve also tried listening to various parts with an automotive stethoscope, both inside the engine compartement and underneath the car, without beeing able to identify where the noise is coming from.

Maybe im missing something obvious here?
What would be your best guess on this?

      Additional info:
My trusted mechanic had a look at it, and he believed the noise was coming from the exhaust or engine. He had a look under the car, suspecting something like motor/gearbox mounts, heatshield or cat. But he couldn’t find anything wrong.. So I’m still left with no explaination to the sound.

sorta sounds like a hole in the muffler but Im sorry I turned the computer speakers all the way up and I can berry hear it to give you a better idea… where do you hear it louder at using the stethoscope??? because I need a lot more to help you… are fetch idea but like a miss fire or timing issue just a off the wall idea that wouldnt make a noise that sorta sounds like I heard but thats a far fetch idea.. but I can berry hear it

Sorry but I can not hear much on the video. I would check the pulleys and also the idler pulleys. If it is easy to do so you can remove the fan belts and start the car for a couple of seconds to see if noise went away. If noise goes away then one of the belt pulleys is making the noise. If the noise is not gone, then you could rule the pulleys out as the culprit.

REMEMBER IF YOU DO THAT TEST RUN IT ONLY FOR A LITTLE BIT!!! the serpentine belt because your water pump is not connected and your car will start to over heat… but its an easy test idea and will eliminate about half of the things

Sorry for the bad sound quality. I will upload another video shortly.

I have two accessorybelts, one that drives the AC compressor and one that drives the alternator, PS pump and the fan.
I did remove the “AC-belt”, and tried spinning the pulley. It definitely made a noise, indicating the bearings are bad. But when starting the engine, there was no difference in the noise at idle/1400-1600rpm. I did not remove the other belt, as its only a couple of months old – as well as the tensioner and alternator clutchpulley.

Correct me if I’m wrong; but isnt the waterpump operated by the timingbelt? Not the serpentinebelt.

Uselly its the serpentine belt that does it … the timing belt or timing chain does the cam shaft and the crankshaft…
