Well, I’m not a Ford expert, but you might have some issues with the sensors because you going from OBD1 to OBD2. Also, I’m not sure if you what your plans are, but it might not run right unless you get a computer from a 4.0.

Hopefully that crankshaft will accept your old clutch and flywheel.

Don’t beat me up too much, but those are just some general thoughts.

I’ve heard of people running dual ECU’s before. You can run the harness and sensors from the 4.0 to a 4.0 ECU and let the 3.0 ECU handle all the interior stuff. It would require a lot of custom wiring and maybe some electrical mods for the gauges (resistors are your friend) but it’s possible. If it’s for a customer I certainly wouldn’t do that unless they know the implications of running a dual ECU.

It may bolt up but the issues will come in when you try to hook up the electronics, with ‘modern’ vehicles it’s not as easy to just swap engines because often the harnesses are different as well as the ECU’s running them so you may be able to bolt up a different engine but getting it to run is a whole different story. To be honest however I really don’t know if you will run into that difficulty or not.

You migt want to look on a Ranger specific forum regarding that engine swap. Great points mentioned above about possible issues. However, anything is possible when it comes to engine swaps if you have the tools, time and money. C8-)

It’s all about the time and money for sure.
