radiator fans not working right

      ok so my radiator fan is not working, even when i turn my ac on. It used to turn on when i turned on the battery but now not at all. If i give it some throttle then the fans will kick on till i let off of it and then they will stop spinning. What is the problem?

        What type of fan is it? I’m guessing electric.

          its a 1992 Honda accord lx, i think its electric

            Very easy to tell electric from mechanical. Electric will be mounted to the radiator whereas mechanical will belt driven by the engine.

              I think it’s electric, but there are still a few things I’m confused about.

              What do you mean by “it used to turn on when I turned the battery on”

              It’s not normal for the AC to activate the cooling fan, unless your talking about the heater fan?

              Does the car over heat?

              Tbh I’m a little confused. You need to explain more.

                The radiator fan when i turn the key to the on position (2nd position i mean like when the dash board lights come on) the fan would start spinning and it would stay spinning the hole time while driving and all. The guy that had the car before me i am just now realizing has no thermostat in the car. I know that is not the issue though. Now the fan does not spin and even when the motor gets to running temp the fan does not turn on. When i give it some throttle the fan will start spinning until i let go and then a second later the fan cuts off. Even when i turn on the ac, both fans will stop spinning, the 2 fans right in front of the radiator. Is that a heater fan? I always thought that was for the AC. But once again if i give it throttle the fans start spinning again. Yes it is over heating

                  Ok so initially I’d say somebody has been f***ing with the electrics and obviously the thermostat. It sounds as though they have taken a live feed from an ignition live straight to the fan causing it to run all the time, to solve an over heating problem.

                  Complete guess but if what I have said is true then the added wire may be on its way out and giving too much resistance to power the fan at idle speed, when you rev the engine the alternator increases the power just enough to make it kick in.

                  But to be honest I could be totally off track here, when a bodged job has been done previously it could be anything.

                  What you do know is that the motor in the fan is good.
                  The temp gauge works so it’s not the tempeture sender
                  You need to replace the thermostat
                  You need to check the wiring

                      i checked the fuses and relays and they seem to be fine. Where should the wires for the fan be running to so i know if it is ghetto rigged or not.

                        Starting simply and without a wiring diagram, I would take the fan fuse out and see if the fan still works when you rev the engine. If it does then you know for sure that it’s been bypassed from another system.

                          i will do that, i just turned on the car and when the ac is on both fans spin till i cut if off. That’s not supposed to happen right, and i see the connector for the 1 of the fans and it is definitely not spliced into another. The other one is hard to follow and it looks like it leads to the fuse box

                            i took the fan fuse out and when i turned on the battery the fan did not start spinning with the ac fan when i turned on the ac, I plugged it back in and it did

                              You need a wiring diagram.

                              At least you know it’s fused,

                              It odd that the AC and the coolant are connected, like this. I generally work on military vehicles in the UK so differences exist between my knowledge and your car. From what I know about Euro cars the two systems are completely separate electronically too.

                              It will be interesting to see other opinions on this.

                              I think I’d start to look at putting a test light on the fan connections first and see if any power is getting to it all of the time. You’ll be able to see the light from the driving seat while reving the engine and will be easier than using a DMM.

                              I think somebody else should jump in here though that has experienced this before.

                                When the a/c is on, both fans should be running. One fan is for the a/c condenser, the other is the radiator’s regular cooling fan, when the a/c isn’t on,this fan should cycle every couple minutes, or as quickly as every thirty seconds.
                                Sometimes the air being blown from one fan will turn the blades on the other fan, giving the illusion that it’s working.
                                Some people will wire the cooling fan to operate anytime the engine is running.
                                Using a multi meter is the best way to start diagnosis. Just unplug both fans, and check for voltage. The switch must be in the on 2 position. This is the switch position where the car would be running. But you don’t have to start the car, just turn it on. Then turn the a/c to on, making sure the interior blower is on. This should cause power so BOTH fans come on.
                                Check for power using a multi meter or a 12v test light. Post results of this test

                                  So what is the purpose of the coolant fan operating when the A/C is on even if the thermostat is closed?

                                    OK i bought a multi meter How do i check the voltage. What do i plug the black and red wire things on the Multi meter to? The fans plugs them selves or the connections they connect to. I am a new at using one of these things,
