My tool man yesterday told me about the NEW freon R123 that is to be used none of our tools will work the recovery machine will not work gages will not work none of the tool we use for a/C work will NOT work on R123 Also R123 will not get as cold as 134 and R123 is highly flammable
what a scam this is going to be
then a guy form subaru told me that in the next few years there will be no wiring in the cars every thing will be control by a wifi signal from the cars computer
and again NONE of our tools scanners will work
I am so glad that I am 63 and don’t have to put up with this crap any more
IF a kid comes to me and asked me about becoming a auto tech I will talk them out of it this
Back in the 60s I loved working on cars BUT today I really HATE todays cars

Not exactly, and R134A is still so cheap why would someone go for a fake? Just wow.

I do remember when R12 became illegal to produce and the price skyrocketed an alternative came out called Freeze 12, which was flammable, toxic and worse than R12 but loopholes allowed it to be used. R123 is not an automotive refrigerant. It’s used for really large refrigerant centerfuges. Someone puts that in their car I’m going to recommend replacing the whole system.

I think you are missing the point what I am told is R134 will be like R 12 It will be illegal and R 123 will be mandated it not that R134 is cheep
My point is NONE of my ac tools will work on R123 To me it nothing more than a scam to sell more tools also the only place were R 123 is produce is in china For me it has NOTHING to do with ozone level
after all these years I STILL love R12. R134 has never got as cold as R 12 and R 123 is not as cold as R 134
I still have 90 lbs of sealed R 12 in my shop and will be keeping it for my own stuff
I am so glad to be at the end of this mess a few more years I will retire form this mess :cheer:

The EPA regulates what auto manuf can use and sell here in the states. Companies that produce the materials, and tool companies that sell us our tools are caught by the short hairs just like us. Snap-on will be forced to spend a lot of money on R & D to develop new products to adapt to these systems.

I really doubt this is some conspiracy to get more money out of techs. Wifi based automobiles are about as close as flying battleships.

Keep in mind we had the technology for the F-22 Raptor during the 90’s. But cost/production was more than NASA’s budget.

we just had to get a new A/C machine, and new A?C oil injector, and new dye, and new oil, for servicing vehicles using the new R1234yf refrigerant, looks like its going to be pretty standard for a lot of new vehicles, but honestly, I wouldn’t buy the equipment unless you were working on these types of vehicle a lot, besides most would be under warranty anyways.

Flammable refrigerants are illegal in automotive HVAC systems. At least in the US anyway. European standards are usually more stringent than ours, so I can’t see them allowing it across the big pond either. R123, as is now, is just another refrigerant that is on track to be phased out of its current application which, according to my reading, is pretty much just centrifugal chillers. R1234yf is said to be slightly flammable with the right criteria. But for now, it’s getting a pass in the US. It’s available and acceptable, but not mandatory at this time for cars and light trucks sold in the US. It is mandatory over in Europe though.
