There are adapters made to allow the connection of R134 equipment to the system. In my experience converting from R12 to R134 works well about 50% of the time. The other 50% works like crap until the compressor fails or leaks develop from the higher pressures. Keep your R12 as long as you can.

If you’re able to wait a few weeks I’ll have a video on this coming out. That said, it’s mostly a matter of changing fittings. The real trick comes in figuring out what to do about the oil that’s in the system and the oil that’s needed for the R134a. I believe I covered this here also.

I know that people may have differing opinions with this, however I am mobile A/C certified and have used both systems. R12 has superior cooling compared to R134a especially in bigger vehicles and higher humidity conditions. R12 also doesn’t usually have to be recharged unless the system has a leak so it lasts much longer. If I were you, I would keep the R12 system, however if you are serious about the conversion you will need new lines and fittings as well as a system evacuation and a switch to PAG or ester oil. The molecules of R134a are much smaller so it develops leaks far more easily and has to be recharged usually around every 5 years.
