Not to long ago I got a roadside assistance Job with a company called AlphaOne.
Before I got hired I made it very well known I will only do a job that can be safely done.Well 4 days into the job (40 hours) I had a couple dozen calls varying from keys locked inside the car to flat tires.
One of those calls was a 1999 Honda accord with a flat tire. I pull out his spare and find it completely bald. I call dispatch to inform them and they insist I do the swap knowing it is pouring rain outside. I also inform them that one of the four (maybe it was 5) lug nuts had damaged threads and would not fasten. Again they insist on doing the change.
Another call was a F-350 with a flat tire. Drivers are given a 3,000 pound jack to work with, I call dispatch as soon as I get the call and inform them the truck is over weight and the jack cannot safely lift the truck. The reply was ” We lift F550s and Motor homes with those jacks”. I said sorry I cannot do the call. You could hear the anger in the dispatchers voice as he replied “Don’t worry we have drivers that will”
Although both of those calls were grounds for me to quit, I told myself I needed to last until payday or my paycheck was going to be altered in some way.
But this last call I could continue no further. The call was a 2008 Dodge Challenger lock-out. Dispatch gave me a females name but when I arrive the person was a younger male that seemed a little uncertain. I ask for his ID and clearly the names didn’t match. I then ask him to fill out his information on the invoice (name address, ect) The information did not match. Lastly, I asked him if he liked the power of the 3.0L V8, now he was very edgy but replied “I love it, it goes really fast buy burns a lot of gas”. Obviously he was busted. I call dispatch and tell them I wont open the car because clearly its not his, nor does he know anything about it. Dispatch replies “It happens” I reply ” I quit “. I turn back to the “customer” and hes gone.
AlpaOne Road Side assistance company is a scam. Although they are primarily here in Southern California they will be expanding to lower Nevada and Arizona soon. Beware of this company and inform friends and family in the area. They are just like many similar companies cutting corners to save money with no concern to safety. As a tech I’m embarrassed to have worked for such a company.
