i watched an “old” ericthecarguy brake video where eric uses silicone paste to lightly lubricate the piston on brakes. i can’t seem to find the video anymore. i guess my question comes down to: how does lightly lubricating the piston (right along the dust boot) help? is eric trying to make sure the dust boot doesn’t dry out? or, am i overthinking this

last, how do i know i need to replace rotors? Is it as simple as making sure they aren’t warped? and that there aren’t any deep gouges? just run the back of my fingernail across the rotors and if there isn’t anything, just keep the rotors? (i last did my honda at around 60k miles, and they are around 112k miles now –original rotors, never resurfaced.

      thanks!

I don’t remember teh specific video, but putting a bit of lube under the boot maket is easier to push in the piston without damaging the dust boot.

As for the rotors, you need to measure both the thickness to make sure the rotors are in spec and also the runout to be sure they are not warped. You need to measure at various places (inside, middle and outside) if you have the tools to make the measurements. Rotors are generally inexpensiveo I tend to just replace. It’s an important safety system why risk anything to save a few bucks?

It makes the piston go in easily, i usually replace rotors theyre not worth the hassle to turn them, they are inexpensive generally, but if you have enough meat left you can get them turned

Not sure about ETCG, but how about:

Your questions about inspecting rotors are answered there.

Skip to 9:23 on part 2 for application of silicone spray to piston:
