Hi folks. I’ve been doing light repair/maintenance work on my cars for years. I only know the basics…if that! I’ve always been confused about a car’s jack points. My current car is a 2016 Honda Accord and I just changed the oil today. Generally speaking, many, if not most, cars are jacked up at the pinch welds, right? That always seems weird to me. Is there a better, more stable place? Also, I wanted to put the car on jack stands today and I can never figure that out either. I jacked up the front left tire at the pinch weld and then put the jack stand directly behind it. That left a small dent in the underside of the car. It felt like some sort of composite material. Again, I’m not an expert by any means, so go easy on me. I just can’t wrap my mind around this whole concept. Any help is appreciated. Brian

Thanks a lot. I’ll watch it asap. I’m a member of a million forums so I know the etiquette of asking questions before searching, and I did search online but couldn’t find exactly what I wanted to know.

Damn, he explains it all. How did I miss this??? So by using the pinch welds to jack the car up, I didn’t have the best place available for the jack stands since my jack was using them. Very interesting. I wish car companies would have big round or square jack points that make it obvious to a DIYer. Even color code them! I mean, if Eric said people have gotten killed doing this, maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Again, thanks for the help. I think I got it now.

FWIW, some Honda models have an arrow molded into the splash guard that points to the front lift point.

Whenever I needed to jackup my car I just used the “bottom plate” of the suspension instead of risking to bend my chassis by jacking at the wrong point.

Get a set of ramps if you are doing simple oil changes.
