As I noted in another post, my car wouldn’t start. No crank/no start. I gave the car a jump start. I knocked on the starter while turning the ignition. No luck. I ended up towing the car to the dealership. Seven hours later, the Service Mgr. is telling me that my instrument cluster is the reason why my car won’t start. Is this possible?

Car: 2006 VW Jetta GLI MKV 2.0T FSI

The MFD Display (LCD in the center) isn’t visible, but my gauges work and so do all the indicators. Do you think the dealership is trying to juke me out of $900 or is this legit?

They aren’t going in there for a couple hours, fixing it and making off like bandits. They’re going to spend an hour or 2 replacing the cluster with one that probably costs $700 just for the part. I believe with VW, there is also a turnaround involved with making the new odometer match the old one. You would want to ask about that. GMs have needles that break or go crazy all the time, and it’s so much cheaper to mail order new potentiometers and put solder them in manually. I’ve done that many times, but they are incredibly simple junky clusters. If I was dealing with your car in the shop, I’d send it out instead of taking it apart myself.

If you want to get thrifty, you can R+R it yourself and send it out to one of many instrument cluster reman services:
