TLDR; How do you get the timing belt on in less than 15min or 2hrs?
I recently did my first timing belt job. Between last night and today I redid it. First time around it took 15min to get the timing belt up over the last hurdle. That hurdle being the water pump pulley. I had run it first over passenger side camshaft sprocket, then under 1st smooth idler pulley, crankshaft sprocket, driver side and camshaft sprocket. I pulled it under the cogged idler under the water pump and finally over the water pump – 15min. This is a new timing belt
I had to carefully get as much slack as possible from both sides of the timing belt to then just find the right angle to nearly get the belt up, then i had to make sure it was barely catching the cogged idler beneath and then muscle it over the water pump pulley. It wasn’t a big deal like this in the videos.
Today it took me 2hrs. The belt doesn’t have enough slack to loop it over everything like in the videos. Nowhere in the videos I’ve seen anywhere on YouTube including ETCG have I seen anyone have much of any difficulty mounting the timing belt. For me it seems like a monumental effort and today, killed a good part of my day and my good mood. This isn’t the last time I’m going to have to do this. Does anyone know how to get this done in a timely manner? Thank you, -AJFresh
Similarly I also mounted a new accessory belt today. Only one of the two I bought. One was able to fairly easily loop over the power steering pump, alternator and crankshaft pulley with little effort. The other one is plainly too short to get around the crankshaft pulley, aka harmonic balancer and the AC Compressor. I’ll try Autozone tomorrow and see if they have a different belt for the AC, or maybe it’s supposed to be like that and there’s something I don’t know about installing the AC belt.
