The misses has a Rav 4, 2 years old, and other than I look like a twerp driving it Its not a bad vehicle. Anywhoo the last week or so driving around in it noticed shifting from P to D is followed by a pretty harsh thud feeling. Its the 4 cylinder engine not the V6.

Its too new for the trans to have shit the bed, but I’m looking for any ideas from experienced Toyota guys of anything quick to check for before I send it back to the dealer. I’m not really thrilled with how they operate. Last oil change they did more oil dripped off the engine and cover than went into the engine for a week and they did a nice job of breaking part of the lower engine cover to get at the oil filter housing. If it wasn’t a leased vehicle I’d just take care of it myself.

      Thanks for any advice.

A couple of questions… Do you get the same thud when shifting into reverse?

Does it go away with a warm engine?

Have you had any recent brake work?

It gets less harsh with a warm engine but its still more than I would think is normal for a vehicle of its value.
Haven’t noticed going into reverse, normally its start and pull away in forward.
Serious brake work no, had tire rotation and parking brake adjusted a month ago.

I am sure you know the usual suspects (axle/engine mounts) and those should be looked at, but there have been issues with brake pads making the clunk noise moving around… Maybe get someone to shift for you and listen at the wheels… Also check axle nuts…

            Good luck

There’s no other indicators of a loose engine mount. Hard accel, or when it shifts everything feels tight and there’s no bumping, so I’ll rule that out. I will check out the brakes tomorrow though so I thank you for that. The techs there I suspect felt extra lazy that day and figured telling me the pads are nearly done was good enough even though I said if It needs them to do them. These are the same techs that told the lady last time she was in that her parking brake didn’t need adjusting meanwhile the lever was practically pointed straight up and down and still barely held the vehicle on a slope.

On that vehicle do you check the AFT with the engine on or off? Hot or cold? and what type of ATF goes in it. Probably worth a look.

Just back from a drive in it now to get dinner. Shifts in reverse a lot smoother. And going from reverse into drive is almost seamless. Just park into drive stinks.

Maybe next time she’ll get that Audi Q5 Tdi she went to sit in 🙂

              Thanks ToyotaKarl!

Transmission fluid should be checked when warm…If you can dipstick check it.. (Toyota doesn’t like ya messin around with the trans fluid)…. This should take Toyota ATF WS (World Standard)…

You’re in capable hands so I’m just going to keep an eye on this thread to see how things turn out.

                  Keep us posted.

All looks normal and good to me actually aside from the pads being close to the metal. When she takes it in next I’m going to suggest it goes to a different dealership and they have a better look.

One thing I did notice is that if you let it run a min or so after starting it the thud into drive is almost nothing. IE giving the revs a bit to drop back down to a normal idle. Could it just be a Toyota thing?

Could be a fluid issue. Perhaps consider chaining it and the filter just to see what happens.
