I have a 1995 Chevrolet Caviler with a 2.2l engine and a 3 speed automatic. I recently bought a salvage yard trans from a salvage yard that was actually out of a 99 Corsica. The trans has no drive. It will shift from first to second but has no drive.I know the transmission has no electronic solenoids for shifting. My first question is do you need any special tools to rebuild it and secondly can you rewire the Corsica transmission electrical plug to get the speed odometer to work. The transmissions are the same with the exception the plug for the speed odometer. I am wondering if the operate the same? All help is greatly appreciated.

That much of a difference in years may be an issue. I’m surprised that the 99 doesn’t use solenoids to be honest. You do need special tools to rebuild automatic transmissions, mainly spring compressors for the clutch drums. It’s also the most complicated component on a vehicle and there are a lot of little parts and seals to deal with. In addition you’ll also need a clean place to do your work, any dirt may cause problems when you’re done.

That transmission does have solenoids in it but I am not sure if they are exactly the same for both years. The speedometer sensor should fit from the old transmission if they are the same transmission with different sensors. The transmission might not be shifting into drive because the speedometer is not hooked up as well. I would switch that sensor and take it for a test drive to see if it shifts after that. Hope this helps.

You can use your old speedo assy just unbolt the 2 10mm bolts on the speedo housing and switch them out. That transmission is called a 125C it has one TCC switch,The internal wiring maybe different from 95 to 99 you can remove the back cover and switch the wiring out.No 3rd gear ,maybe the TV cable is bad or out of adjustment. The 125C is a Gov controlled transmission so even if the speedo wasen’t working you should have 3rd gear.

I have a book for the car and I actually bought a new tv cable and adjusted it according to the book settings. I was told that the gear on the back of the low reverse drum could be stripped off.I appreciate all the help.

I will try because its worth a shot …a lot easier than trans removal lol.

The TV cable helps adjust shift timing and nothing else. It really won’t help if you have worn out clutches.
