I Have An ’01 Ranger, With 300,000kms, In Good Running Shape, Well Maintained, Has Passed E Tests Before No Problem, But Want To Make Sure She Passes For A Winter E-test. I Usually Get It Done In The Summer Before My Birthday, As In Canada They Add Additives To Prevent Our Fuel From Frezzing And It Decreases Our Milage. Long Story Made Short…I Was Wonder If You Had Some Advice Or Little Tricks. This Trick Comes From Scotty Kilmer And Wondering If Anyone Has Tried This Trick Out, And If So How Did It Work Out.
1 Gallon Per 10 Gallon Of Gas, Or 1 Gallon For Half A Tank. Run @ Idle For 30 mins Or Drive Hard For 150 miles, Or until Next Refulling To Clean Out A Clogged Cats With P0420 Code. I Do Not Have This Code But Wanted A Second Opinion/Advice Has Anyone Tried This Trick To Clean Out Their Cats For Emission Test. I Read Of Trying Methyl Hydrate, But… That’s Why I’m Here. Before I Do Anything, I Wanted Some More Tips Or Hints To Make Sure She Passes With Flying Clours! Thanks Guys!

I personally have not tried this method.if you have been
passing emissions and the truck is running well. Just take
through emissions.no sense in taking a cat down when you don’t
need to. If it aint broke. don’t fix it.

I have tried the method on my friends cat for his car and yes it does work, but you don’t have to do it if you don’t have a CEL code or anything. Just like college man said if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it.

Had a cat that got crudded up because of a bad ignition coil on a 2002 Galant 2.4. I was getting a p0302 and p0421. Once putting the new coil in and clearing the codes the p0421 came back a day later. I mixed a can of lacquer thinner with 1/2 a tank of gas (small can, maybe a little over a quart, not a gallon like Scotty Kilmer used) and cleared the code again and ran it down and a week later the code has not come back yet.

Also, capitalizing every word makes your post hard to read. I started getting a headache about 1/2 way through.

I’ve never tried it and I’m familiar with the video. I’ve always wondered if it worked myself as that would be a neat trick. I’m with the group however, if you don’t have a code and you have a good running engine I would leave well enough alone and not worry about it unless you need to. Thing is if you did need to you would probably have a code for an emissions problem.

I have a 1999 dodge caravan in sick bay with the famous p0420 code,,there is always a reason that cats go bad or get clogged.Be it silicone sealant in the motor, oil being burned which is why this cat is bad in this caravan because of burning lots of oil.It might be the magic bullet, but there is a reason behind a dirty cat.

I wonder if you dunked the dirty cat in lacquer thinner for a while to dissolve the gunk?

Another video has him take it off and let it soak in soapy water over night, no doubt that soaking it lacquer over night would do the trick…maybe too well… lol

In his video Scotty says take it off and soak it overnight in a bucket of soapy water.

My 1999 Honda Odyssey has been intermittently throwing the 0420 code for the last 18 months. The car was/is running well, so I’d reset the code and it would stay away for a while. At first a month or two, but since the winter it would return sometimes as soon as 5 days later.

I too saw Scotty K’s video and had hope of avoiding a multi-hundred dollar repair, but was a little skeptical. I never tried the lacquer thinner but was considering it until seeing Eric’s video on it in Jan/Feb

Well, SeaFoam was on special at the local auto store and I couldn’t remember the last time I SeaFoamed my engine so I bought some. I used the entire can via the vacuum line ingestion method and let it sit for a while after choking the engine off.

Well after starting the engine then clearing a whole bunch of new codes for cylinder misfire (6 of them), the 0420 catalytic code has not returned. That was about a month ago and ~1200 miles. I know there are a lot of variables working here so not sold it’s fixed (yet), but so far so good. It remains pretty cold here in the North East and the car get used for a lot of short trips – as such, that is representative of conditions that threw the 0420 code.

Cat and O2 sensors are original – car has 236K miles. I do NOT work for SeaFoam, own their stock or even work in the automotive industry – just a back-yard mechanic that really enjoy’s Eric’s videos.
