This is part of a short little series that I hope you find useful, not only is it an informative video but it’s also linked to new material on the ‘Codes’ page on this site to making interpreting the information easier.

That’s pretty handy. I’m surprised Honda kept such a feature so long into OBDII era. While I can use Torque along with my $12 OBDII Bluetooth adapter and Android phone, I don’t always have the adapter around so I wish more manufacturers featured this.

I remember the fun of fixing my old 88 Cavalier using that primitive OBDI. While OBDI was better than nothing and generally helped you along, I do very much enjoy being able to launch an app on my phone and view real-time info.

When in the wrecking yard. Where can I find that blue clip that you made? What part of the car did you get it from?

Do the old OBD 0/1 Hondas support live data?

OBDI never supported live data. It all had to be done manually with a DVOM.

There are lots of places where they used a 2 pin connector like that and they aren’t all blue, it just happens that the one that I found was blue. I think it was from something in the HVAC of an old Legend if I remember correctly, it was quite a few years ago. Remember you don’t need the ‘tool’ you just need to jump the terminals to get the job done.

Hey Eric, that was a pretty neat trick. Nice one.

Wow Eric, recently I’ve discovered that this very same method is actually used in my 1995 Citroen AX to read the codes from the ECU.

In my case the codes can be read by grounding one of the two pins (the one on the left, holding the connector’s spring downward) of the ECU diagnostic port for about 5 seconds; then the check engine light turns off, then blinks on once, then a pause, then twice (code 1-2 = start of diagnosis).
Then you have to ground the pin again , and it will start with the error codes (if there is any).

In the end the code will be two slow blinks (code 1-1 = end of diagnosis)

To clear the codes is as easy as grounding the pin for about 10 seconds 🙂

                    Very interesting!

And by the way, my code was 2-2 (two fast blinks, a pause, two fast blink) which meant I had a faulty idle control valve/stepper motor; I kinda already knew it was faulty, but wanted to counter-check my own diagnosis with that of the ECU 😆 before replacing the part!

I’d really like to do a video to explain the process, but I have some big hurdles
                    – very small and dark garage
                    – no real videocamera, only a cellphone or a camera (the one for the still-pictures)
                    – not very good english pronounciation 😛

I could post some pictures however 😉

                    For the moment…

Eric, thank you for all the great videos, I’m a big fan. I was hoping you could point me in the right direction of this connector in my 2000 Odyssey, thanks.

I believe it’s behind the passenger kick panel under the glovebox.

Hey! I have a 2001 Honda Accord, and I can’t find this connector. The closest thing I see is a the same kind of blue connector but in the driver’s side fuse box, and it only has one wire. Tried it anyways and it doesn’t work. Do you (or anyone) happen to know where the appropriate connector is in an ’01 accord? I’m guessing it looks different in my car. Your videos have helped me more than once. Thanks so much!

It should be just behind the passenger side kick panel. It may also be just behind the carpet on the passenger side.
