After researching several times, and getting different ideas, I just wanted to know the proper way to clean a drive-by-wire throttle body. Specifically on a 2004 Camry (4cyl 2AZFE) and 2004 Acura TSX (4cyl k24).

I watched the video Eric put up, but I heard opening the butterfly by hand is bad on drive-by-wire throttle body.

Should I disconnect the battery spray and just clean outside the butterfly? Put the key in the “On” position and hold the gas open to open the valve? Open the valve by hand?

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Don’t disconnect any power or remove. You should be able to
push the butterfly open to clean. 🙂

I just did this a few weeks ago, and having to go through a complete idle relearn procedure….I ask you to pause for a second, and ask yourself “what am I really gaining by doing this?” From a performance standpoint the answer is likely NOTHING. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and do it, but don’t be surprised if you cause yourself some temporary headaches.

If I HAD to do this again…I think I would just spray a little TB cleaner around the top and bottom of the butterfly and then leave it alone. I don’t think manually moving the butterfly damages it…but it seems to disturb the idle.

Well on the both cars sometimes the idle is a little rough, especially when the A/C is on. Does it worry me? Not at all. Just thought it would be an easy thing to do. I have no intention on a performance increase. Just some PM.

Now the Camry (109k miles) is what worries me a little. The Idle is great, haven’t had an issue with it (knock on wood) but this engine (2AZFE) is notorius for needing throttle bodies replaced. I just thought of giving it some PM to not worry about this. Some have had luck never cleaning it and it’s fine, some said cleaning it regulary (every 25k) will prevent problems.

You think I should just pray some outside the butterfly without distributing it, and call it a day?

Have you inspected the throttle bodies? Are they dirty? If you haven’t checked, pull off your intakes and take a look. If they are not that dirty, I would personally leave them alone. If they look dirty, I think I would just spray a little in there and call it a day. My vehicle had 86K miles on it when I cleaned it…there was a little dirt, but nothing extreme.

On a side note – I don’t think your rough idle with the AC on is related to a dirty TB. The AC compressor is putting a load on the engine at idle…is your car a 4cyl or 6cyl? I think its normal for most 4cyl engines to run a little rough when sitting with the AC on. If the idle is REALLY rough with the AC on, that might point to a problem with your AC compressor. When you say rough idle, does the idle fluctuate? Is the idle still within factory spec? If the idle is dropping way low (less than 500rpm)…that is not normal.
