I am wondering what the average price of a valve and head job on a 2002 mustang gt, They did not have to pull the engine for this job. replaced everything dealing with the timing chain including guides. complete valve rework, build up material on one cylinder all new valves and one new camshaft new headgasket, new head bolts, new valvecover gaskets. I just feel like the price that i payed. $2,250 was too much from a jasper dealer. can anyone give me an idea how much i over/underpayed. or is that a normal price now?

i can tell you the labor would be about $800.00 here in Cullman AL. plus parts and machine work most of the time on heads it runs around 1300 but giving they put new cams and new timing set it could run that 2200.00 it does sound a little hi ( $600 ) but it is all in what kind of parts was bought. and there labor rate and if they do all the or sub heads to a machine shop but ( they should have bin ABEL TO GIVE YOU A CLOSE ESTIMATE 0 UP FRONT)

thanks for the reply, I do not have the parts sheet yet, and you will bet ill be asking for one! they are a jasper engine shop, so I am guessing only jasper parts. that and it comes with a small warranty of 5 months or 15k miles only on the parts that they fixed, or say it drops a valve or anything like that. They also could not give me a estimate because we did not know what was causing the issue or honestly i would have just sold the car and cut my losses. sad thing is whats done is done and the car is a salvage title. i think i just lost a lot of money sadly. figured it would be something around the $700 dollar mark saying it was probably a broken/weak valve spring, ohh well thats life. LOL

Got the car back! on my test drive i noticed something and they just said it was the new valve seats and valves breaking in. on mid range acceleration i get what I can only describe as the sound of a Harley Davidson motorcycle at low rev’s powering down the road. i could almost call it valve chatter, but it sounds like mild detonation in the cyl that was reworked. no codes current or pending in the computer, car is running great, but I am just worried about that sound. Will it go away after the 1k break in cycle?

That would be a question and issue to point out with the business that just took a lot of your money.

turned out to be some bad cam phasers! the sound got to the point that it was completely fine at idle, but anything past 1/3 throttle had a very loud ticking sound, and an occasional misfire. Sounded so much like valve chatter when i first picked it up. My how things will fool you!
